Doing Stuff That Matters

Kia ora e te whānau,

A friend recently reminded me — in the most unexpected way — that sometimes we underestimate the value of what we do. I’d been lamenting a quiet patch in work and wondering if I was doing enough, contributing enough, being enough. Her reply was simple:

“You’re busy doing stuff that matters — paid or unpaid. You just underrate how much you’re doing and the importance of it.”

That stopped me in my tracks.

It reminded me how often we, as celebrants, can downplay the significance of our work — and yet, what we do matters deeply. In moments of joy, promise, loss and love, we help people make sense of life’s transitions. Whether we’re standing before a couple making vows, a family saying goodbye, or a community gathering to remember, we leave an imprint that endures.

Serving on the National Executive has reminded me of this in a different way. The work may be behind the scenes, but it still touches lives — supporting our colleagues, strengthening our profession, and ensuring celebrants across the motu are seen, supported, and celebrated. I continue to be humbled by the calibre, heart and wisdom of those I sit alongside, and grateful for the chance to learn and contribute.

So, as the year winds down, maybe take a moment to recognise yourself too. The care you bring, the words you craft, the presence you offer — they matter. They might not always fill the bank account, but they fill the bucket, and that’s pretty special.

Here’s to all of us — quietly doing stuff that matters.
